About Rhinoplasty
The nose consists of bones, cartilage, skin, and mucosal lining that together create its unique appearance. The aesthetics of the nose play a significant role in the overall harmony of the face; thus, many choose rhinoplasty to achieve a more attractive balance. Statistics indicate that rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed forms of cosmetic surgery, with thousands of procedures being carried out every year. Rhinoplasty can be used to decrease or increase the length or width of the nose or to change the shape or angle of the tip or bridge. It can also straighten or enlarge malformed nasal passages that restrict breathing.
Many undesirable features in a nose can be improved through nose surgery. Noses may be made narrower, straighter, longer, or shorter. Humps may be removed and the shape, size, angle, and definition of the tip can be altered. Breathing problems caused by a deviated septum can also be corrected. Overall, the ideal outcome for a rhinoplasty procedure is a natural-looking nose that balances and harmonizes with the rest of the face, and not only matches but enhances the appearances of surrounding features like the eyes and lips. Together, these features form the “triangle of beauty;” the ratios and harmonious positioning of the eyes, nose, and lips. Rhinoplasty is, however, considered to be one of the most complex procedures in cosmetic medicine. (1) These procedures require meticulous planning and attention to detail. Every nose is extremely unique to each individual, so surgeons must consider factors like race, genetics, age, skin health, and more while planning a rhinoplasty to ensure effective results and patient satisfaction.
Benefits
The nose is a defining feature of a person’s face. As such, an unsatisfactory appearance will cause frustration and self-image issues. Correcting this and creating an ideal appearance means enhancing one’s confidence and appearance, but patients also experience various other benefits:
- Easier breathing: Rhinoplasty can correct an airway that is obstructed by the shape of the nose or path of the septum. Fixing this means breathing is easier, and when breathing is easier, sleep quality may improve and stamina may increase.
- Attractive nose and enhanced appearance: Correcting your nose will help you look like your best, most attractive self.
- Personalized procedure: Nose surgery is specialized for each patient to create a natural-looking nose. Dr. Davoudi and his team take this as an opportunity to also provide hospitable, personalized patient care to maximize your comfort throughout the process.
- Quick recovery: Dr. Davoudi’s skill and experience have allowed him to refine his operative methods to minimize pain and discomfort and ensure a swift recovery.
Candidates
Patients who have nasal features they wish to correct may qualify for a rhinoplasty procedure. It is generally recommended that these procedures only be performed once facial growth is completed, which is at around age 15-16 for women and 16-17 for men. These features do not have to be purely cosmetic, either. Some patients may have a nose that they are perfectly content with but experience breathing issues. Additionally, special care will be taken to enhance their breathing ability while maintaining the current appearance of their nose.
If you are not content with the appearance of your nose or have trouble breathing because of it, then we encourage you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Davoudi at your earliest convenience. This is the best way to discuss your candidacy for the procedure and learn about the options available to you.
Personal Consultation
At your consultation with Dr. Davoudi, you will first discuss your reasons for seeking a rhinoplasty procedure. This comprehensive evaluation ensures the formulation of a personalized surgical plan aimed at optimizing both aesthetic and functional outcomes. Following this, he will take pictures and measurements of your nose to assist in his planning. Once finished, you will schedule another preparatory appointment and your procedure. You may also receive prescriptions for pain medications and antibiotics to assist in your healing.
Preparation
Once you have scheduled your rhinoplasty, adhering to pre-operative guidelines will promote a smooth surgery and recovery. You can expect detailed instructions from Dr. Davoudi, which may include:
- Ceasing the use of blood-thinning medications and supplements.
- Avoiding tobacco products well before and after your procedure.
- Filling prescriptions in advance for pain management and antibiotics.
- Arranging transportation home post-surgery.
- Taking adequate time off work to facilitate rest and healing.
Procedure
To perform rhinoplasty, Dr. Davoudi begins by making incisions either inside the nose or in the skin between the nostrils to minimize any visible scarring. The skin is gently lifted away from the cartilage that supports the nose so it can be sculpted into a shape that is more harmonious with the general contours of the face. If the septum (cartilage in the center of the nose) is inhibiting airflow, it will be corrected.
Each rhinoplasty procedure will be performed differently depending on the patient’s goals. Rhinoplasty procedures can be performed under general anesthesia or with local anesthesia depending on the patient’s or doctor’s preference, but general anesthesia is more common. (1) Incisions can be made inside the nostrils or on the septum. In all rhinoplasty procedures, Dr. Davoudi first separates the soft tissues of the nose from the underlying structures, then reshapes the cartilage and bone which causes the deformity.
In some cases. Dr. Davoudi may shape a small piece of the patient’s cartilage or bone to strengthen or increase the structure of the nose. (2) This is done for cosmetic reasons or to improve breathing and function of the nose. In rarer cases, a synthetic implant may be used to reconstruct the nose if the normal structure of the bone and cartilage is badly damaged or weakened.
In many cases, Dr. Davoudi will employ a closed approach to the patient’s rhinoplasty, meaning that incisions and corrections are made through the nostrils, rather than through incisions on top of the nose. (2) These methods normally result in faster, safer recoveries and minimal scarring. (2)
Recovery
Your procedure will end with Dr. Davoudi and his team applying absorbable sutures and gauze dressings onto your nose and face. A tape dressing will cover the nose for one week, and there may be some discoloration and swelling around the eyes which will improve over 5-7 days. You may also have splints placed inside and around your nose to provide structural support and protection. (1) One week is usually enough time for returning to work and social activities. We recommend resting for at least 4 days and then slowly returning to light activity, but only begin doing so if it feels safe.
Results
Once your nose has healed, bruising has faded, and swelling is reduced, you will start to see the results of your rhinoplasty. Whatever features were present before will have been eliminated and you will be left with a nose that is not only more attractive but enhances your natural beauty altogether. While nose surgeries are some of the most complex in medicine, they also produce some of the highest rates of patient satisfaction and increase these individuals’ quality of life significantly. (1)
